The Dude and Carl swap gigs for a sausage roll tour of Brighton & Hove!

Place: TRUFFLES

Situated on George street in Hove and run by Nanna’s, this place is stocked full of homely delights and we went straight for the “pork and apple”. This sausage roll is nothing short of genius, the apple lifts the richness of the meat, perfectly crisp pastry and succulent pork with a near perfect balance of seasoning.

Difficult not to go back for another!!!! 9/10

Place: St Ann’s Wells Café

Sitting in the middle of St Ann’s Wells Gardens, this place swaps traffic noise for bird song on a gentle breeze… The sausage roll on the other hand is a monster!

It’s huge, more sausage than roll, substantial and has a certain Gravitas. Pork is accompanied by caramelized onions and whole grain mustard, a true mouth watering monster! So big we had to feed what we couldn’t eat to the seagulls, who judging by the racket they made loved it as much as we did!!!! 7/10

Place: Flour Pot Bakery

Lovely café and bakery on Sydney street and a great place for people watching, we went for the “vegan Sausage roll”. As controversial in sausage roll circles as mayonnaise on a bacon butty, we boldly chomped our way into battle. A beany based centre with sundried tomatoes cutting through the dryness of the beans accompanied by a subtle spice all wrapped in a thin pastry actually made for a very tasty snack! Although the Dude preferred the coffee! 6/10

Place: Brighton Sausage Co

Situated in the Heart of Brighton’s bustling North Laines this butcher is well known for its top quality, free range meat and award-winning Sausage Rolls. We went for the “Traditional” sausage roll. Unlike the other rolls we tried that day with their fancy ingredients, this sausage roll wasn’t singing, and it wasn’t dancing, but it was the kind of sausage roll you can sit down with like an old friend and look back on the good old days. No nonsense, just a simple balance of free range pork and crispy pastry evenly seasoned with traditional spices. 6/10
