Gig Buddies Brighton Fringe Festival Recommendations

The Gig Buddies members are very excited to see this year’s performances, films, talks, tours, exhibitions, stand-up comedy, and workshops which will take place this May and June during the Brighton Fringe.

As Brighton Fringe is Gig Buddies official charity partner, we are now luckily enough to be offering tickets to our members. If you would like to support a participant and go along to join your favourite events, we would love to hear from you.

Wild Onion by Orange Skies Theatre. Photographer James Frederick Barrett

Event 1: Wild Onion by Orange Skies Theatre

This is a particularly relevant performance with Gig Buddy members. It brings together three characters who with them carry and share their own story.

A new kind of narrative cabaret blending theatre, dance, and circus arts, with an eclectic playlist and approximately 100 onions, WILD ONION brings 3 best friends together in this riotous, compassionate hour, finding that in the support of chosen family we’re all able to grow.

As Daisy loses sense of herself in hidden family history, we also meet Rach, who’s managing her fear of men by expressing violence towards onions, and Adam, who’s trying to make himself cry (while on a cyr wheel).

If you are a fan of electronic music with some light-hearted humour, this is certainly one to watch.

Nick Sayers Drawing

Event 2: Nick Draws Nationals: Global Pandemic Portraits Exhibition

Throughout the Covid pandemic, Brighton artist Nick Sayers has been drawing pen portraits of people in each country of the world, via Zoom video sessions, and writing stories about their lives in lockdown. The project reveals how different nations and people have dealt with the ongoing crisis in their everyday life. So far, he has drawn people in over 100 of the world’s 197 nations. Drawings and tales from this “virtual travelogue” will be displayed in a travel agent window, and on walls around the city. The artist is raising money through the project for Doctors Without Borders (MSF.org) via affordable donations.

Nick Sayers is a science-inspired artist whose work includes geometric drawing machines made from bicycles, camera obscura, six-month-exposure pinhole photos, cycling astronomy tours of the Solar System at one: billion scale, and spherical sculptures from recycled materials. He has brought creative STEM activities to schools and science events in the UK and around the world.
